According to Carl Padovano's family, towards the end of the Iwo Jima campaign, Neil Fulton faked engine trouble and landed his B29 Superfort on Iwo Jima (that "South Pacific area" mentioned in the article). He found Carl on a chow line at the Front, came up behind Carl, and slapped him on the back of the head. Carl, without turning around, said "Neil, you son of a bitch." With that, Neil turns knowing Carl is OK and leaves.
